Cabbages Grower Guide

PRODUCTION GUIDELINES FOR 1 HECTARE OF CABBAGES & OTHER BRASSICAS

Cabbages are widely adapted to a wide range of weather conditions hence they can be grown throughout the year in most regions. Cabbages may be planted by direct seeding or transplanting of seedlings. Direct seeding may require up to 2kgs of seed.

Plant spacing: Large headed cultivars 60 – 70cm between rows and 45cm within rows, small to medium headed cultivars 60cm between rows and 30cm within rows.

Seedlings should be transplanted as soon as they reach the desired size. Populations of 40 – 45 000 plants/ha and 55 – 65 000 plants/ha are ideal depending with the cultivars.

For baby cabbage populations of between 80 000 – 100 000 plants per hectare are recommended. Only well hardened round, stocky plants should be used at planting.

Cabbage thrives in well drained moisture retentive loamy soils well supplied with organic matter, ideal soil pH ranges from 5.5 – 6.5

Optimum temperature for growth and development is between 18 – 20 degrees celsius, it is fairly resistant to frost and can survive at very low temperatures without damage.

This post really helped me fill the gaps I had in this subject. Been looking for something like this for ages but since this topic is so obscure, not many people are knowledgeable in it. Excellent work.
